According to Kompas.com, the film follows the journey of a group of friends from South Korea who choose Bali as their holiday destination. What begins as a cheerful vacation quickly turns into a nightmare after they accidentally destroy an ancient jar that holds mysterious powers.
The once joyful trip gradually shifts into a terrifying ordeal. The four friends find themselves trapped in increasingly tense situations while in Bali. They are haunted by a mysterious entity that threatens their safety, a terror that emerges after they ignore prohibitions during the Nyepi celebration.
As the story unfolds, the threats intensify, turning their holiday into a desperate struggle for survival against frightening supernatural forces. The breaking of the jar unleashes vengeful spirits that begin to torment them. The situation becomes even more complicated as the incident coincides with the sacred Nyepi Day.
Bound by restrictions that must be respected during Nyepi, the characters face severe limitations. They cannot freely seek help, move to safer places, or escape the looming danger. The silence that should bring peace instead becomes a source of tension, amplifying their fear.
The film features several well-known Korean actors. Kwon Da-ham, recognized for his roles in A Killer Paradox and D.P., stars as one of the leads. He is joined by Choi Tae-eun, known from Graceful Friends and Checkmate, as well as Lee Jeong-hoon, who appeared in High School Love Story.
Adding a local touch, Indonesian actress Della Dartyan also plays a significant role, strengthening the cultural atmosphere and contributing to the storyline’s development.
By blending the sacred traditions of Nyepi with supernatural terror, Taboo: The Silent Day offers a fresh approach to the horror genre. Because they break these taboos on a rare night when several lunar cycles overlap, the characters find themselves relentlessly hunted by supernatural forces. They are trapped inside with no ability to escape, seek help, or make a sound.
