Renowned singer and performer Jason Derulo emerges victorious in legal battle.
Music News: Jason Derulo Wins Lawsuit
Jason Derulo has emerged victorious in a copyright trial regarding the writing and production credits for his 2020 hit, Savage Love.
According to Billboard, a jury in Los Angeles delivered a verdict on Thursday, dismissing the claims made by session musician Matthew Spatola against Derulo and Columbia Records.
Consequently, Spatola will not be receiving any royalties from Savage Love, a song that gained popularity on TikTok in August 2020 and later topped the Billboard Hot 100 with a remix featuring BTS.
During the trial, Spatola, who contributed guitar and bass to the track, argued that he played a role in creating the instrumentals and should therefore receive writing and production credits.
Derulo refuted these claims, stating in court that Spatola merely followed instructions and did not contribute creatively to the song.
After being in the legal system for three years, the case was decided in favor of Derulo by the jurors, who reached a verdict after deliberating for just over a day.
