Italian authorities have officially canceled the highly anticipated concerts by American rappers Kanye West and Travis Scott due to severe public order and security concerns. The decision was made following a request from the local Jewish community to cancel Westâs scheduled performance in Reggio Emilia. The events were scheduled to take place in July at the RFC Arena.
The cancellation was announced by Prefect Salvatore Angieri after safety assessments were conducted by local officials. Nicoletta Uzzielli, leader of the local Jewish community, had urged authorities to cancel the concert and replace it with a performance that promotes music as a universally unifying force.
The decision to cancel the concerts was influenced by the cancellation of the rapperâs previous shows in other countries, as well as the potential risk of counter-demonstrations. Additionally, the logistical danger of hosting back-to-back events on July 17th and 18th, considering the huge crowds both artists attract, was also a factor. Travis Scott has faced scrutiny over crowd safety following the tragic incident at the 2021 Astroworld festival in Houston.
Kanye West, now known as Ye, has been embroiled in controversy over his antisemitic, racist, and pro-Nazi comments. The rapper was banned from entering the UK, leading to the cancellation of his headline performance at Londonâs Wireless Festival. His European tour has seen a series of cancellations, including shows in Marseille, France, and Chorzów, Poland.
The lineup for the Italian concerts was set to include other major acts like The Chainsmokers, Rita Ora, and Swedish House Mafia. Despite the backlash, West has been trying to make a comeback to the mainstream public eye. In a statement published in January, he apologized for his past behavior, attributing it to his bipolar disorder causing him to lose touch with reality.
