Breaking Free: Lorde's Departure from 17-Year Record Deal

New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde recently made headlines by ending her 17-year record deal with Universal Music Group. This decision marks a significant milestone in her career, as she looks to explore new opportunities and creative ventures outside of the traditional music industry structure. Lorde's move reflects a growing trend among artists seeking greater control over their work and a desire for more autonomy in their creative endeavors. It will be interesting to see how this decision shapes her future projects and opens up new possibilities for her artistic expression.

Music News: Lorde Ends 17-Year Record Deal

Lorde has confirmed she is now an independent artist.

In a voice note sent to fans on Wednesday, the What Was That singer â€" real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor â€" shared that her contract with Universal Music Group (UMG) has ended.

Lorde signed with UMG in 2009, and four years later, dropped her chart-topping debut single, Royals.

“At the end of last year, my label deal â€" my record contract with Universal â€" came to an end,” she began. “I have been in that contract for a very, very long time, in some form… since I was 12 years old, when I signed my first development deal with Universal.”

Lorde went on to emphasise that she “adores” everyone at UMG.

Representatives for the New Zealand-born artist and Universal have not yet commented on the update.

Elsewhere in the voice note, Lorde divulged that she is determined to get a driver’s licence before she turns 30 in November.

“I’m studying for my permit… I must be a licensed driver before I turn 30,” she joked.

Lorde released her fourth studio album, Virgin, last June.

Earlier this week, the organisers of Lollapalooza announced that Lorde, along with Charli XCX and Tate McRae, would headline the upcoming edition of the U.S. festival.

Lollapalooza 2026 will take place from 30 July to 2 August.
