Music News: Red Hot Chili Peppers Work On New Music
Red Hot Chili Peppers are quietly gearing up for their next chapter.
With his own solo debut Honora arriving in March, bassist Flea has teased that the band are working on their first studio effort since their back-to-back albums, 2022âs Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen.
Speaking to MOJO magazine, he revealed that he and guitarist John Frusciante have been deep in writing sessions, working from Fruscianteâs home studio and chasing that unmistakable Chili Peppers spark.
He said: âWeâve been writing and recording at Johnâs place, and the music feels great.â âOnce we start playing, itâs all about finding that magic groove and doing it right.â
Flea also opened up about the contrast between working solo and creating within the Chili Peppersâ long-running dynamic. He compared the band to a constantly evolving four-way partnership â" one that comes with its own challenges, intensity and emotional weight.
Meanwhile, Anthony Kiedis and co recently distanced themselves from an upcoming documentary about their former co-founding member Hillel Slovak.
The Under the Bridge hitmakers were interviewed for the Netflix show, The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, about the late guitarist â" who died over a heroin overdose in 1988, aged 26 â" but the Chili Peppers have insisted they had ânothing to do with [the documentary] creativelyâ.
The band said in a statement: âDear people of the universe, about a year ago, we were asked to be interviewed for a documentary about Hillel Slovak. He was a founding member of the group, a great guitarist, and friend.
âWe agreed to be interviewed out of love and respect for Hillel and his memory.â âHowever, this documentary is now being advertised as a Red Hot Chili Peppers documentary, which it is not.â âWe had nothing to do with it creatively. We have yet to make a Red Hot Chili Peppers documentary.â
Red Hot Chili Peppers â" completed by Chad Smith â" hope the forthcoming film will âspark interestâ in the late guitarist.
They added: âThe central subject of this current Netflix special is Hillel Slovak and we hope it sparks interest in him and his work.â
Anthony and Flea are among the stars who have been interviewed for the upcoming documentary, which is directed by Ben Feldman.
According to Variety, the film was secretly screened at the Cannes Film Festival last year, where it was marketed to potential buyers, before further screenings in New York and Los Angeles.
The filmmaker said in a statement: âItâs a true honour to partner with Netflix to bring The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to a global audience.
âAt its heart, this is a deeply relatable story â" about the friendships that shape our identities and the lasting power of the bonds forged in adolescence.â âWhatâs less relatable, of course, is that here those friends went on to create one of the greatest rock bands in history. Iâm profoundly grateful to the band and to Hillelâs family for their trust and generosity, and to Netflix for helping bring this story to the world stage.â
